Abstract / Description: 

SRI Robotics is developing the PROXI™ humanoid robot, which can operate up to 20 times more efficiently than current humanoid robotic platforms.  In answer to DARPA’s challenge, PROXI was built to demonstrate the possibility of robotic assistance to humans in response to natural and manmade disasters.  This talk will discuss the key mechanical, electrical and control aspects of PROXI; as well as the components, integration and software design that has allowed such a high performance and high efficiency robot possible.  For further background

Bio: 

Curt M. Salisbury is a Principal Research Engineer at SRI International, leading research activities in robotic systems. He has a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Stanford University (2009) and 10 years of experience leading research and development teams for government and commercial customers.

Dr. Salisbury's doctoral work focused on the development novel haptic hardware and methods for microsurgical training and telesurgery.  He has also created innovations in autonomous mobile robots for human load-carrying assistance.  While at Sandia National Laboratories he supported DARPA's Urban Hopper Program and was the principal investigator for the Sandia Hand funded by the DARPA ARM-H program.  Recent work at SRI has focused on low-cost high-performance robot arms, as well as the development of an efficient humanoid robot under DARPA's Advanced Actuators program.  His work has resulted in numerous peer reviewed publications and patents pending.
