SLAC is a multi-faceted, R&D institution with one-of-a-kind onsite tools that lead the world in probing the fundamentals of nature. In this talk, we’ll discuss the technologies that have enabled these tools and how SLAC has applied these same technologies to multiple uses. Examples of how the accelerator technologies that enabled these capabilities have been applied to medicine, national security and industry will be presented. In the area of advanced instrumentation for research, examples of detector systems for South-Pol, mountain peak in Chile, to Space-based experiments are presented.
Gunther Haller is the Deputy Associate Laboratory Director for Technology in the Technology Innovation Directorate at SLAC. He joined SLAC in 1986, and has built and lead the SLAC instrumentation division. He served as the chief electronics engineer for multiple, large scale projects such as the FERMI Gamma-Ray Space Large Area Telescope instrument, the SLAC LCLS Experimental Controls and Data Systems construction, and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory (LSST) camera. Gunther received a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1994.
Dr. Mark Kemp is a Senior Staff Scientist and Department head of Advanced RF Systems at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. He has served as PI for projects ranging from ultra-high efficiency RF sources, to compact neutron sources, to high power modulators for the International Linear Collider. Presently, he is PI on several projects using piezoelectricity for ultra-high voltage generation and VLF communication. He has served as Technical and General chair of the IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference and frequently teaches at the US Particle Accelerator School. He received his PhD from the University of Missouri.
