We present highly integrated digital imaging radars enabled by advances in latest CMOS technology. The ability to integrate digital processing as well low power high rate ADC and DACs has enabled us to look into CDMA inspired modulation technology as signaling mechanism for radars. Such signals though used widely in many radar applications has only recently made inroads in automotive and commercial applications. The natural advantage to include large number of MIMO channels allows us to create imaging application not only for very short range applications but also for use in areas typically considered long range for automotive/commercial use. We describe architectures for such radars and present several examples of the high resolution nature of the radar imaging that is currently available. These radars are also able to analyze the wideband signals leading to cognitive approaches of signal analysis and selection using channel sensing mechanisms. Such techniques are imperative as future success of radars in these application areas would depend on their ability to handle interference from other radars with many disparate signal schemes. We will also show examples how digital radars can use channel sensing to analyze the environment to identify the nature of other radars in the neighborhood.
Murtaza Ali is VP of Systems Engineering at Uhnder, Inc, where he oversees development and implementation of novel radar systems. He has more than 25 years of experience in systems development. His current research focus is on radar signaling techniques, MIMO methods for imaging radars and interference mitigation/avoidance. Prior to Uhnder, He was at Texas Instruments (TI), where he led R&D teams in new technology and application development in the areas of mm-wave radar, vision technology and communication systems. Murtaza holds a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Minnesota. He has 50+ U.S. patents and has published over 40 papers in refereed and invited forums. Dr. Ali is a senior member of IEEE.
