Data centers are finding that networking power consumption is consuming ever large amounts of power as transmission rates increase.  Some of the solutions they are investigating are lower power optical transceivers and advanced packaging concepts.  This presentation describes the industry drivers, some of the new approaches to improving energy efficiency of the links, some of the challenges involved in achieving these goals, and provides an example implementation of an energy efficient monolithically integrated optical engine.
